Kiehl's is at it again. For this year's Earth Day, the brand partnered with Chloe Sevigny and Michael C. Hall to design labels for the Limited Edition Rare Earth Cleansing Masque. All of the net proceeds benefit Waterkeeper Allilance,  a grassroots advocacy organization with nearly 200 member organizations. The masque detoxifies skin with fairly traded Amazonian White Clay. Check it out in stores or online today.

Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara

Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara

We try so many mascaras, it isn't easy for one to stand out. Estée Lauder's Sumptuous Extreme Mascara did just that. It does a bang up job of volumizing your lashes without the usual problems that go with it like flaking and smearing. We took a couple of passes through our lashes to smooth out the occasional clumps. At $23.50, it's more expensive than your drugstore alternatives; but the results are worth it. Lastly, we know packaging is far from the most important product feature, but Sumptuous Extreme comes in a show-me-off gold tube. Look for Estée Lauder gifts with purchase this month at Nordstrom, Lord and Taylor, and Macy's.

April Is National Rosacea Month

Being of Irish descent, I know the problems of fair skin a little too well. Not only do us lighter skin ladies have to be extra careful in the sun, we're also at higher risk for a skin condition called rosacea, an inflammatory skin condition. The most noted characteristic of rosacea is persistent blushing—even when you're not embarrassed or in the presence of your crush. A flare up of rosacea can be triggered by anything from an intense Zumba class, that glass of pinot noir you had after work or even hot weather.

The good news is that rosacea can be treated and you don't have to suffer alone. April is National Rosacea Month, which was started by the National Rosacea Society to help educate people about the condition. A few facts:

  • Rosacea affects 16 million Americans, many of whom don’t know that they have it.
  • Rosecea is often undiagnosed or mistaken for other common skin issues such as sunburn, allergies or acne.
  • In addition to flushing, rosacea is characterized by redness, bumps and blemishes on the face.
  • Though rosacea is more common in fair skinned women, it can affect women and men of all skin tones.
  • While there is no known cure for rosacea, it can be managed through lifestyle changes and medication. If you think something is going on with your skin, head to the dermatologist.

Full disclosure on this post: I’m participating in this contest sponsored by Galderma Laboratories, L.P. to win a trip to the Emmy’s.

Spring Nail Trends 2011 from butter London

butter London Spring/Summer 2011

We're fans of butter London nail polish mostly because of their gorgeous colors and the smooth and shiny finish. Their grays and neutrals over the past few seasons were the most wearable and attractive we wore. This spring and summer's collection is inspired by the Impressionist style prints that were on the runways from New York to Paris-- think of Monet's art when you imagine these colors. As always these lacquers are non-toxic.

The colors include Lady Muck, a powdery periwinkle blue, slightly on the grey side and infused with pearl pigment for a soft, sexy sheen; Teddy Girl, a pale retro bubblegum pink; our favorite, Blagger, a striking cobalt blue; Dosh, molten apple green with a touch of metallic gold; and Hen Party, a sheer opal lacquer that can be worn alone or as a top coat.

Famous fans include Kate Moss, Miley Cyrus,  Rihanna, Mandy Moore, Hilary Swank, Amy Adams, Kelly Osbourne, Heidi Klum, Daisy Lowe and Courtney Cox.

Lacquers run $14 each at www.butterlondon.com.

Review: SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense

SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense

SkinCeuticals latest, Blemish + Age Defense, arrived just in time for my most recent breakout. Sadly I still get them even though I've passed my thirtieth birthday.  Blemish + Age Defense was designed specifically for those of you in my position, looking to control adult acne and prevent aging. The combination of dioic acid and alpha and beta hydroxy acids inhibits oil production, controls acne causing bacteria and fights surface lines and wrinkles.

I used it for the first time three nights ago. There was significant stinging with the first application (be weary if you have uber sensitive skin); but my skin is acclimated to it now. My skin feels smoother though there is some flaking on my forehead. Product directions recommend less frequency if you have discomfort or peeling, then slowly working up to a couple of times each day. My skin has cleared up in just a few days and I'm hoping it'll stay that way. In the meantime, I'm also watching the lines around my eyes. It took a lot longer than three days to make them so expecting results this quickly is too optimistic; but I'll let you know in a few weeks!

Learn more and order Blemish + Age Defense at www.skinceuticals.com.

Batiste Dry Shampoo Review

Anyone who knows us, knows that we can't live without dry shampoo. It helps make our blowouts last upwards of a week and ensures that we can go on a weekend trip without having to pack styling products (save for hairspray). We recently tested out the Batist Dry Shampoo, and it's fast becoming a fave.

The Pluses:
  • It's an aerosol so it sprays evenly across your hair.
  • It works well--we generally start using it on day 3 of a blowout and don't need it again until day 5 (we generally wash our hair once a week).
  • It smells great. We tested the Blush fragrance, which has a slight powder-y smell. It neutralized bar odors from the night before.
  • The price can't be beat. A 5.5 oz can sells for $2.99 on Amazon.
 The Minuses:
  • The spray is pretty forceful and gives our hair a white-ish cast. The trick is to let it set for a few minutes, then either massage it in with your fingers or brush it through, depending on what look you're going for.
The Batiste Dry Shampoo currently ranks as our second favorite. The Neil George spray takes the top spot, but it's also $18 for a can that's smaller.

Batiste Dry Shampoo is available on Amazon.

Help for Pre-Trip Breakouts

Anyone who has planned a vacation knows that despite the reward of getting outta town, it can be a stressful experience. You have to make sure everything is squared away at the office, rush around town to get your mani, spray tan and Brazilian wax, unearth your bikini, hit the gym so you look OK in that bikini, pack and much, much more. Then factor in a germ filled plane and well, it's a wonder we don't all wind up at the beach with at least one pimple!

Our new favorite remedy is Proactiv. As we're 30+ and on the dryer side, it's not right for our skin everyday, but there are a few miracle products that we use pre-trip and during our away time. First up, the Proactiv Clear Purifying Mask. It contains sulfur to clean out your pores so clogged ones don't even have a chance at turning into a pimple.

On the plane and at our destination, the Proactiv Makeup Removing Clothes rock. They're perfect for those late nights when you're too tired to wash your face but you know you should. Bonus: They remove eye makeup, including stubborn mascara, with zero irritation.

A third fave is the Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer. It's lightweight, superfresh and ideal for keeping skin hydrated in humid, beach temps.

All products are available at 888-819-2019.

What Men Notice First

Steve Ward

In a recent study conducted by Pantene, 74% of men indicated that they notice women because of their hair and more men notice a woman's hair before her clothes, legs or makeup! We all know that good hair is important but I had no idea that it is one of the most prominent observation by men during their first encounter with women. How long your hair is plays a big part, as well as smell, shine and feel.

Most of us didn't know that men even paid attention to these things but Steve Ward, host of VH1’s Tough Love confirms that they do! Being a professional matchmaker, he is well in tune with what men are really looking at and it was obvious to him that a guy would rather date a woman with well groomed healthy looking hair rather than a low cut shirt.

Since guys are actually noticing these details, Hallie Bowman, Pantene's Celebrity Hair Stylist recommends deep conditioning at least once a week (specially in the winter), using hair type specific products (curly vs straight, etc.), adding volume with Pantene Fine Triple Action Volume Mousse to increase the look of fullness and always keeping your favorite hair product in your handbag for late in the day touchups. The last is my top tip, too, since most hairstyles get progressively flatter, stringier, etc.  throughout the day.

And for all you guys out there: A complement on her hair can win a girl over, as Amber of Beauty Blogging Junkie recounted after receiving one from Steve. Even though his over-analyzing of her facial expressions ultimately lost her, her hair is what brought him over to her table. Now that is proof of the power of nice hair on first encounters!

Emergency Skin Repair

June Jacobs hydrating masque

We're fresh off a plane from New Orleans, where we had a blast drinking and eating and eating and drinking. While all the food and cocktails were delish, after all the salt, sugar and booze combined with a plane flight, we were feeling rather prune-like by the time we walked through the front door. Enter the June Jacob's Intensive Age Defying Hyrdating Masque. Sweet almond and apricot kernel oils give it that extra hydrating boost. After using it and taking a long shower, we're starting to feel a little more human again. Now if only we could figure out how to drop the 25 pounds we gained this weekend as easily!

For extra dry skin, Jacobs recommends applying a thin layer before bedtime, "you'll wake up with baby soft skin," she says.

Available at JuneJacobs.com.

Win Olay Professional Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System

Our fab dermatologist Dr. Doris Day was on the Dr. Oz show earlier this week talking about the newest ways to get younger looking skin. One of the products she recommends is the new Olay Professional Pro-X Exfoliating Renewal Cleansing System. (Click on the photo to see the video.) Dr. Day likes it because it makes washing your face every night easier—and studies show that's something 50 percent of us fail to do on a daily basis. Cleansing is an important step, because it allows your moisturizer and other anti-aging products to absorb better.

The handheld device has a brush that rotates to clean and exfoliate skin and has been shown to clean skin 6 times better than by basic cleansing alone. JSG is partnering with Olay to giveaway 5 cleaning systems. To win your own lay Professional Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System do one of the following by Monday at 11:59 PM EST:

1. Leave a comment below telling us how often you wash your face.

2. "Like" The Jet Set Girls on Facebook and leave your face washing info on the wall.

3. Follow us on Twitter (We're @JSGAnne and @JSGHope) and tweet: Follow @JSGAnne and JSG Hope and RT to enter to win an Olay Cleansing system. #giveaway #freebie

How to Avoid Static Hair

Summer's pesky humidity which turns our hair to frizz gives way to an equally annoying problem in the winter: static hair. The dry air and cold temps are yet another challenge, especially if you're headed to Sundance or on a ski trip. Here are the best ways we've found to combat those flyaways:

1. Moisture is a natural static killer. Keep your hair well moisturized with a deep conditioner a couple of times each week. We use Phytojoba Intense Hydrating Mask (available at Sephora for $38) for soft, shiny hair. Also, don't wash your hair as often. Not only does washing dry your hair out, so does using the hair dryer.

2. Use a good leave-in conditioner. We like the Aveeno's products because they're easy to find, easy on the wallet, have spray-on application, and leave our hair silky.

3. Use a styling product like Morrocanoil (at salons and on line) which imparts shine and protects your hair from the dryer. That extra layer of product repels those pesky protons which make your hair stand on end.

4. Use a natural bristle brush which distributes the oils in your hair from root to end better than a synthetic brush. Like Morrocanoil, your own oils protect your hair.

5. The old-school method of getting rid of static by spraying your brush with hairspray doesn't work if there's alcohol in the hairspray. It'll only dry your hair out further and attract more static.
